Below are the 28 US cities where rent for a one-bedroom apartment is cheaper than it was in March, according to Zumper. Municipal governments across the United States are looking to rein in spending as pandemic-era stimulus dries up and inflation lingers for longer than expected. The group issued a AA investment grade general obligation bond rating for New York City in March 2024. The financial challenges within cities appear to be mounting despite high municipal credit ratings and robust demand for urban commodities like housing. "I think we can all agree that we're broke," said Houston Mayor John Whitmire in a March 2024 City Council budget hearing. Meanwhile, in the case of New York City, leaders remain optimistic about future returns.

In a country roiled by recession worries, those at the top of New York City — for better or worse — couldn't give a single gilded shit. For New York City, a brush with death called for a time of decadence. ESPN Bet is coming to the Big Apple. Wynn Interactive, a subsidiary of Wynn Resorts, was awarded a New York mobile sports betting license in 2021. Penn was not — and it has missed out on the action from the nation's largest sports betting market. But Eilers & Krejcik estimated ESPN Bet came away with 8% market share when it launched in November, good enough to take a third-place position. Now, if New York gaming regulators sign off on the license transfer to Penn, ESPN Bet could provide new and potentially formidable competition in the nation's biggest sports betting market.

In December, Euromonitor International released its annual list of the Top 100 City Destinations in the world for 2023. The report compared cities using 55 metrics across six categories, including tourism infrastructure, health and safety, sustainability, tourism performance, and more. Euromonitor International's analysis also included a top 10 ranking of global cities based on the number of international arrivals. New York City was the only destination in the United States to make Euromonitor International's top 10 list. This, in turn, will drive consumer demand for intraregional travel, especially as travel purchases are frequently discretionary," Nadejda Popova, Senior Manager at Euromonitor International says of the report's findings.

East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, has the longest average commute time at 36.2 minutes one way. The New York City metro area ranked second, while four California cities were in the top eight. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows that residents of East Stroudsburg, a city about 40 miles north of Allentown in Pennsylvania, have the longest commute times of any metro area. The ‘Happy Dream’ of Running a Circus
  + stars: | 2024-01-13 | by ( Marty Lasalle | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +1 min
When people ask me what I do for a living, and I tell them I run a circus, I’m usually met with an eye-roll and some quip like, “Yeah, so do I…” And then there’s an amusing moment when I insist, “No, I’m the actual CEO of the Big Apple Circus.”There’s no denying that this is a tricky time to be running a circus. At times it feels like a struggle to get anyone out to see something that can seem as old-timey as the circus. The last few years have not been kind to the American circus industry. In the period after the financial crisis, Big Apple’s board made valiant efforts to keep the circus afloat, but in 2016, it declared bankruptcy. This was followed by the discontinuation of The Greatest Show on Earth in 2017 and Cirque du Soleil’s bankruptcy in 2020.
